Cardboard box, carton box or corrugated shipper?

“Cardboard box” is a broad everyday phrase. In procurement it may refer to a folding carton, a rigid box or corrugated packaging. A corrugated shipper has fluted material within its board structure and is commonly used as an outer transport package. Naming the construction avoids comparing fundamentally different products. ^[board]

A retail carton and a shipping carton can both be part of the same product system. The retail pack presents the product; the shipper groups and protects sale units during movement. Some designs perform both functions, but that should be an intentional requirement. Tell the supplier whether the box will be seen by the final customer and how it will be opened.

For FMCG distribution, begin with the actual packed goods. A carton containing rigid filled bottles has a different internal arrangement from one containing flexible pouches. A partition, pad or different count may change the way the pack behaves. These are design questions to discuss, not accessories to add after the outer size has been approved.

When searching for cardboard packaging boxes near me, include the intended use in the enquiry. A manufacturer can assess a request more efficiently when it says “outer shipper for filled bottles” than when it says only “large cardboard box.” The latter does not identify the product, loading pattern or expected handling.

Understand 3-ply, 5-ply and 7-ply construction

In common corrugated trade terminology, a three-ply board has two liners and one fluted layer; five-ply has three liners and two fluted layers; seven-ply has four liners and three fluted layers. These correspond to single-wall, double-wall and triple-wall constructions. The sketches below show layer counts only and are not drawings of specific Super Smart Pack products. ^[board]

Layer count is useful, but it is not enough to select a box. Paper characteristics, flute profile, dimensions, joints and conversion quality also belong in the discussion. Avoid treating “five-ply” as a universal synonym for a particular carrying capacity. The same general construction can be used in different designs with different performance.

Ask the manufacturer which constructions can be supplied for your project. If your present specification includes paper grammage or a named flute combination, share it. If it does not, provide the use conditions so the proposed construction can be evaluated properly. Do not invent an arbitrary ply requirement merely to make competing quotations look comparable.

For double wall corrugated requirements, explain the reason behind the request: a known specification, an existing approved package or a proposed change to a distribution route. That context is more useful than a general instruction to make the box stronger.

Measure the packed product before specifying the box

State internal length, width and height in a named unit, normally millimetres for a drawing. Internal dimensions describe the space available for the contents; external dimensions matter for pallet layouts, shelves and transport. Clearly label which dimensions you are sending. A photograph with no scale is insufficient for confirming either.

Lay out the intended contents, including caps, labels, retail cartons, dividers or protective pieces. Record the count per layer and number of layers. Allowances should be established through a sample packing trial; do not assume a generic clearance suits every product. A tight pack can be difficult to assemble, while excess space may allow unwanted movement.

FEFCO codes provide a shared vocabulary for corrugated packaging designs. A style code helps describe the structure without a long verbal explanation. It does not itself specify paper grade, load capacity or test acceptance criteria. Pair any code with a drawing and performance requirements. ^[code]

Small shipping boxes can present packing and labelling constraints; large cardboard packing boxes can present handling and storage constraints. Size alone does not indicate whether a box is suitable. Review the filled sample with the people who will actually pack, lift, seal, scan and receive it.

If a change in bottle dimensions is planned, revisit the carton. A minor change repeated across several units can alter the pack layout. Keep the bottle and case drawings linked in the approval record so they are not revised independently without review.

Strength: distinguish board tests from package performance

A test on a piece of board and a test on a finished box do not answer the same question. FEFCO lists methods for characteristics such as bursting strength, edgewise crush resistance, water absorptiveness and compression resistance. Ask which method and conditioning apply when discussing a result. ^[test]

A request for a “high-strength carton” becomes useful when paired with what the case must do. State the gross weight, stacking arrangement, storage duration, transport route and the kinds of damage you need to prevent. Ask the supplier and your packaging team to turn those conditions into an evaluation plan.

Humidity and sustained loading matter to corrugated performance. Research on creep under compression examines how loading and environmental conditions affect lifetime behaviour. That is a reason to describe your warehouse and distribution conditions; it is not a basis for assigning a universal percentage loss or a guaranteed load to every box. ^[creep]

For example, a dry short-duration trial may not represent storage through a humid period. Record conditioning and storage assumptions in the approval documentation. If your route changes substantially, review the package rather than assuming an old result covers all future circumstances.

From enquiry to an approved shipper carton

1. Describe

   Send contents, dimensions, case weight and the distribution route.

2. Develop

   Agree a proposed construction, style and packing arrangement.

3. Evaluate

   Pack a sample and check fit, closure, handling and agreed tests.

4. Control

   Approve the drawing, artwork and revision used for supply.

Separate structural approval from artwork approval. The box may fit correctly while the printed handling mark is unclear, or the artwork may look right while a flap interferes with packing. Review each aspect with the appropriate people. Confirm how the final approved versions will be identified on the purchase order.

For a printed shipper, specify what is operationally important: product description, batch marking space, orientation marks, barcode area or destination labels. Ask about available print processes and limitations. Single-colour printing and white corrugated carton boxes are options to enquire about, not capabilities confirmed by this guide.

Use a realistic packing trial. Assemble and close the sample using the intended method, then assess the actual product arrangement. Check whether packers can repeat the sequence consistently and whether receiving staff can open the case without damaging sale units. A carton is part of a workflow, not only a flat drawing.

Keep a record of the approved sample and any written concessions. If a temporary alternative is accepted, identify the order or period it covers. Otherwise a short-term workaround may become an undocumented repeat specification. For recurring orders, refer to an explicit drawing or sample revision rather than “same as last time.”

Before dispatch, agree how cartons will be bundled, protected and identified. The correct carton can still arrive difficult to use if the receiving team cannot distinguish similar sizes. Clear stock identification is especially useful when one brand has several bottle formats and case counts.

Storage, packing and transport: protect the carton too

Treat unused cartons as production materials that need organised storage. Keep them in a clean, covered area and avoid conditions that introduce moisture or physical damage. Use a stock rotation routine and inspect visibly affected bundles before they reach the packing line. Ask your supplier for handling guidance appropriate to the supplied construction.

When packing filled cases, keep the agreed orientation and internal arrangement consistent. A change in the number of units, divider layout or closure method should be reviewed. If the trial used a particular sealing approach, switching to another approach without evaluation creates a different package.

For palletised loads, share the pallet dimensions and intended arrangement with the packaging team. Review how cases are supported and how the load will be restrained. For loose-loaded vehicles or courier handling, describe those conditions separately rather than assuming a pallet-based evaluation will cover them.

Document damage with useful context. Record the case location in the load, visible moisture, seal condition, product arrangement and photographs before unpacking where practical. A report that simply says “box crushed” gives little guidance on whether to investigate handling, stacking, construction or a change in contents.

Compare carton quotations on the same basis

A meaningful quotation comparison includes size, style, construction, quantity and print scope. Ask whether the quote includes development, dies or plates where applicable, packing, freight and taxes. Confirm minimum order requirements and lead time directly; this guide does not publish a fixed price or delivery promise.

Discuss total packed-product cost rather than chasing the cheapest empty box. Too much unused space may create unnecessary material and handling; too little space may disrupt packing or damage goods. The objective is a fit-for-purpose package that performs in the intended journey. Any material reduction should be validated, not assumed to be harmless.

For a recurring carton requirement, separate firm orders from forecasts. Explain the ordering frequency and whether several SKUs will be needed together. A common specification format across your SKUs can make purchasing easier, but do not standardise dimensions or strength requirements merely for administrative convenience if the products need different protection.
